"White Tie" events
Also referred to as, "full dress," this is an extra special occasion.
It may be a diplomatic event, a fancy ball, or a upscale fund-raiser.
A tailcoat is appropriate. This will be accompanied by a white pique wing collar shirt
and white pique vest and tie. It should also include
classic black trousers with the formal satin stripe and black patent shoes.
"Black Tie" events
You’ll want to choose a comfortable tuxedo in the traditional black, worn with
a white shirt. The coat will have a peak edge, notch
collar, or shawl collar. This should be accompanied by a colored vest (or cummerbund),
a matching tie, and patent shoes. If you're not sure what to wear, we
can guide you to the latest formal attire expected at "Black Tie" events.
Wedding Preparations
As a groom preparing for your wedding, you should select your formal wear in person. Several important factors should be weighed when
choosing a tuxedo. Most importantly, is the tux right for you? Are you comfortable wearing it, and does it look good on you? Will it
match the look of the bride and her bridesmaids? Determining the answers to these questions is one of our specialties.
Only by meeting with you in person can we determine which tuxedo is
perfect for you.
You should also make sure that you and your groomsmen can come in ahead of time for proper measurements to be taken.
When we have the right measurements, we can make your tuxedo fit like a glove, making you look your best.
Jackets
Full Dress
A term also used interchangeably with, "white tie." When referring to jackets, it means tails or tailcoat.
Single-breasted
This term refers to a jacket with a symmetrical front and buttons at the center. It is the most common tuxedo jacket and gives the wearer
the option of leaving his coat buttoned or unbuttoned.
Double-breasted
A coat with one side which overlaps the center and buttons across to the other side, creating a fuller look in the chest.
The coats are almost always buttoned while standing.
Vents
A vent is an opening in the back or side of a jacket. A center vent is a coat with one vent in the center of jacket.
A side vent is a coat with two vents, one on each side of the coat.
Barrel-sleeve
The ends of the jacket sleeve are overlapped with no sleeve vent.
Dinner Jacket
Usually a white shawl collar jacket, which can be single or
double-breasted. It is always worn with black tuxedo pants.
Lapels & Collars
Notch Lapel
A lapel with a triangular indentation.
Shawl Collar
A rounded collar.
Peak lapel
A V-shaped lapel which points upward.
Top Collar
A jacket collar which extends around the back of the neck from lapel to lapel.
A few other things
Vests
Worn in place of a cummerbund, the angularity of vests often goes nicely with a peak or notch lapel.
Backless vests have adjustable back closures at the neck and waist.
Full back vests have panels in the front and back, and are fitted to match coat size.
Cummerbunds
The alternative to vests, these are pleated swatches worn around the waist. Cummerbunds are often chosen to match the
smooth curves of a shawl collar jacket. A cummerbund should always be worn with the pleats facing upward.
Studs
Four button-like adornments used in lieu of the buttons down the center of the shirt. Studs are always worn with formal shirts.
Cufflinks
Two button-like adornments which fasten a formal shirt's cuffs. Cufflinks are always worn with formal shirts.
